Group Class: Genetics

This group session was led by Dr. O'Donnell. He explained that there are now several tools that physicians can use to help understand why some patients experience conditions. He used himself as a "test subject" and explained how certain critical pathways (for instance, how a person absorbs a particular nutrient) that have a genetic mutation could be supported with medication or lifestyle choices.


Recent research has suggested that "precision lifestyle medicine" or therapies that look at genetic influence may offer new solutions for patients who have chronic disease, such as diabetes 2 (Mutie et al, 2017), metabolic syndrome (Toro-Martin et al, 2017), weight loss (Papandonato et al., 2015), alzheimer's disease (Freudenberg-Hua et al., 2018).
